NORTH BEACH URBAN PARK, VIANA DO CASTELO, 2020

On the seafront of Praia Norte in Viana do Castelo, with approximately 600 metres of waterfront and around 40,000 m² of area, a new Urban Park is proposed. The regeneration of this natural heritage aims to enhance the quality of life of its users. A new waterfront is being transformed.

With the creation of the Praia Norte Urban Park, an opportunity arises to introduce new connections, new spaces and circulation systems, allowing users to experience the area as a continuous whole. The relationship with the beach is strengthened, a major waterfront promenade is created, and the beach becomes an integral part of the park.

Thematic Squares
Several thematic squares, new buildings and support facilities for the new Urban Park aim to enhance this territory. New green areas and large meadow platforms are defined, where use is free and flexible, enabling a diversity of typologies and functional programmes within the park’s new environments.

Culture Square
A sloped plane introduces a natural outdoor amphitheatre for performances and various events.

Beach Square
Support buildings and facilities for the beach, together with large meadow areas, create spaces of continuity with bathing activities.

Sports Square
A large platform for children’s activities and outdoor fitness equipment offers solutions for different user groups, promoting family use and accessibility for all ages.

Stone Square
A large granite paved surface encourages various activities, such as small thematic fairs during summer nights and other events.

​

Leisure and Well-being Square
A large meadow clearing defines a privileged space for physical and recreational activities, such as yoga classes, dance and others.

​

Finally, the transformation of this territory integrates the Northern Coastal Ecovia, reinforcing continuity along the coastline.
